Aguero Penalty Help City Keep Pace With Liverpool

Sergio Aguero's 59th-minute penalty earned Manchester City their fourth successive Premier League win as they beat West Ham 1-0 to remain one point behind leaders Liverpool.

Having beaten Chelsea on penalties in Sunday's EFL Cup final at Wembley, quadruple-seeking City were not at their usual brilliant best against a West Ham side led by their former manager Manuel Pellegrini.

David Silva hit the post early on but it was substitute Bernardo Silva who came off the bench to win a spot-kick that Aguero converted by sending Lukasz Fabianski the wrong way.

Liverpool's 5-0 victory over Watford at Anfield may have been more emphatic, but City got a result that means they can at least temporarily return to the summit at the weekend as they play before their title rivals.

Christian Eriksen might end up in the Spanish capital after all, but it's Atletico Madrid who are now linked with a move for the Dane should they not be able to finalise a move for James Rodriguez this summer. The Colombian is the priority, but the Tottenham playmaker is a Plan B worth considering and one that hasn't been ruled out. It has to be remembered that although James himself is open to moving to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, a move can only happen if Real Madrid are willing to negotiate with their cross-city rivals and agree an affordable deal, with Napoli now seemingly priced out. Fearing that Madrid will ask for too much, Diego Simeone, Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Andrea Berta have put the possibility of the Danish international on the table. Eriksen is determined not to extend his Spurs contract, which ends in 2020, and has been on Los Blancos' radar for some time, but Zinedine Zidane doesn't want him in his squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set a new record points haul for a manager in their first 10 Premier League matches after Manchester United's 0-0 home draw with Liverpool took him on to 26. Solskjaer became United's interim manager in December, replacing Jose Mourinho after a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. The Norwegian swiftly instilled a more attack-minded approach and United have remained unbeaten in the Premier League since he took over. Sunday's goalless draw at home to Liverpool is only the second time they have dropped points in the league under Solskjaer – the other being against Burnley at Old Trafford, when United came from two goals down to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw. The two managers go head to head in Sunday's Carabao Cup Final but while Guardiola's City are chasing a possible quadruple, Sarri is clinging to the job he was only given last summer.  But Sarri's Chelsea have more wins (28) after 43 games than City did in Guardiola's first season at the Etihad Stadium in 2015-16.
