Di Maria Stars as PSG Progress in Cup

Angel Di Maria capped a superb performance with two goals as Coupe de France holders Paris Saint-Germain beat Dijon 3-0 in Tuesday's quarter-finals.

Di Maria has stepped into the breach since Neymar's metatarsal injury with five goals, the latest two helping seal PSG's progression to the last four with ease.

A sumptuous lob put Thomas Tuchel's side ahead, before he pounced on a loose ball to double their advantage before the break.

Their intensity dropped in the second half but Thomas Meunier added a late third to keep PSG's treble hopes alive.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane will not face any punishment following an incident with Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta on Wednesday. England captain Kane, 25, appeared to move his head towards the Spaniard in an incident during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League win at Stamford Bridge. Kane was not punished at the time and, as the incident was seen by officials, no further action will be taken. Tottenham host Arsenal in the north London derby on Saturday. The incident took place after Chelsea kicked the ball out of play to allow Spurs' Kieran Trippier to receive treatment. Kane pressurised Chelsea defender David Luiz when Tottenham returned the ball. Luiz complained to Kane and captain Azpilicueta confronted him before the pair were separated by Luiz.

Mourinho Defends Decision to Sell Salah at Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has defended his decision to allow Mohamed Salah to leave Chelsea in 2014, claiming he “wasn’t physically prepared” for the Premier League. Salah joined the Blues in 2013 and scored two goals in 13 league appearances, including the final goal in Mourinho’s team’s 6-0 win over Arsenal in March 2014. He was loaned to Fiorentina before being sold to Roma in 2016, where he earned his reputation as a reliable goalscorer in Serie A. Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea in 2015 just months after winning a third league title with the club, told BeIN Sports: “I asked Chelsea to sign Mohamed Salah, he was inexperienced and not prepared physically to adapt to the style of play in Premier league. “Now, he is physically and mentally strong and well adapted to Premier League because he went to Italy and gained experience. “He is a wonderful person and I wanted him to stay at Chelsea but he was looking for more minutes.”

Claude Puel has been sacked by Leicester City, the club announced on Sunday. The Frenchman, who was appointed in October 2017, had seen his position come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks and a 4-1 battering at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday sealed his fate. A sizeable portion of the Foxes' fans stayed behind to vent their frustration at the King Power Stadium, with Leicester yet to win at home in 2019 and having earned just one victory in nine competitive outings. And Leicester have opted to make the change less than 24 hours the crushing defeat, with a club statement reading: "Leicester City Football Club has parted company with Claude Puel, who leaves his position as First Team Manager with immediate effect. "The club would like to thank Claude for his efforts in leading the team during his 16 months in the role and wish him well in his future career."

Algeria became Africa Cup of Nations champions for a second time as they edged Senegal 1-0 in a scrappy final on Friday. Djamel Belmadi's side needed a sensational last-gasp Riyad Mahrez winner to beat Nigeria in the last four, but it was a scrappy early strike that decided this clash as Baghdad Bounedjah benefited from a huge deflection. Further chances were few and far between in an ill-tempered affair as Algeria withstood almost constant pressure and also saw a Senegal penalty award overturned with VAR. The single goal ultimately proved enough to hold on, Algeria triumphing on foreign soil for the first time to add to their 1990 success as hosts.

Arsenal Go Fourth After Easing Past Saints

Alexandre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were on target as Arsenal coasted past struggling Southampton 2-0 to move back into the Premier League's top four. It took just six minutes for Lacazette to convert from Mkhitaryan's attempted shot and the latter turned home the dangerous Alex Iwobi's assist at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Lacazette wasted a couple of golden opportunities to stretch the lead before half-time and, while Arsenal's tempo noticeably dropped after the break, Unai Emery's side were in complete control. Manchester United's goalless draw with rivals Liverpool consequently sends Arsenal back into the Champions League places, while Southampton remain mired in relegation trouble.
