Chelsea Appeal to FIFA over Window Transfer Ban

Chelsea have lodged an appeal with FIFA against their ban from signing players during the next two transfer windows.

FIFA announced in February that the ban had been imposed on Chelsea for alleged breaches of regulations regarding the acquisition of players under the age of 18.

At the time, Chelsea were quick to announce their intention to appeal the decision, stating the club 'categorically refutes' the findings of FIFA's Disciplinary Committee.

A statement released on the club’s official website read: “Chelsea FC has today received a decision from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concerning alleged breaches of the FIFA Regulations that relate to the international transfer of players under the age of 18.

“The decision imposes a transfer ban of two consecutive registration periods and a fine of 600k Swiss francs.

“Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee and will therefore be appealing the decision."

Chelsea have been banned from the transfer market for two windows after FIFA found them guilty of a serious and systemic breach of the rules regarding their dealings with foreign players under the age of 18. The governing body announced the sanction on Friday at the end of a lengthy investigation into the club and how they have registered players at their academy over a number of years. FIFA had looked into more than 100 player cases at Chelsea. FIFA said that the club had been found guilty of 29 breaches of Article 19 – the most serious infringements relating to the registration of minors and several others. Chelsea have been fined 600,000 Swiss francs (£460,000) and given 90 days to “regularise the situation of the minor players concerned”, which could involve them being forced to move on anyone brought to the club in contravention of the regulations. Sanchez Ruled Out for 6-8 Weeks

Alexis Sanchez faces up to two months on the sidelines according to Chile national team doctor Pedro Onate, who analysed the knee injury the forward sustained in Manchester United's win over Southampton. Sanchez was replaced after 52 minutes of the 3-2 victory at Old Trafford following a challenge from Saints defender Jan Bednarek and United's own medical staff have yet to provide a prognosis. But Onate said that exams of Sanchez's condition showed he had suffered distention of the medial ligament, which would take a number of weeks to heal. Onate told El Mercurio: "There won't be any problems for him to be at the Copa [America], because he'll be out for between six and eight weeks. "Alexis may even play again before that time. Plus, there's a long way to go until the Copa America."

Declan Rice's switch of international allegiance from the Republic of Ireland to England has been approved by FIFA. Rice represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level and made three appearances for the senior side in friendly matches last year, but took a self-imposed exile while he weighed up his international future. The 20-year-old, who qualified for Ireland through his grandparents, ended six months of speculation over his future on February 13 by committing to England.
