FIFA Approves Declan Rice's Switch from Ireland to England

Declan Rice's switch of international allegiance from the Republic of Ireland to England has been approved by FIFA.

Rice represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level and made three appearances for the senior side in friendly matches last year, but took a self-imposed exile while he weighed up his international future.

The 20-year-old, who qualified for Ireland through his grandparents, ended six months of speculation over his future on February 13 by committing to England.

England manager Gareth Southgate names his squad on March 13 and Rice will hope to be included after some impressive performances for West Ham.

Karim Benzema would be forgiven for lamenting the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, but the striker admits he is happy to be be playing his "real football" as he takes charge of leading the club's attack. “Before there was a guy who scored more than 50 goals per season and my role was to provide assists,” the striker said. “I played to help Cristiano, we formed a good partnership. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set a new record points haul for a manager in their first 10 Premier League matches after Manchester United's 0-0 home draw with Liverpool took him on to 26. Solskjaer became United's interim manager in December, replacing Jose Mourinho after a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. The Norwegian swiftly instilled a more attack-minded approach and United have remained unbeaten in the Premier League since he took over. Sunday's goalless draw at home to Liverpool is only the second time they have dropped points in the league under Solskjaer – the other being against Burnley at Old Trafford, when United came from two goals down to rescue a point in a 2-2 draw. No More Monday La Liga Games After Fan Protest

La Liga games will no longer take place on Mondays, says the Spanish FA's president Luis Rubiales. Alaves supporters held a mock funeral during their La Liga win over Levante in protest at the match being switched to Monday night for live TV coverage. Alaves fans also protested about fixture changes during their game against Athletic Bilbao, held on a Monday in December. "Business is important, but fans more so," Rubiales said on Twitter. He added: "There will be no more football on Mondays. From next season in La Liga, there will be football on Saturdays and Sundays. We will see what happens on Fridays, if we reach a good agreement for all." Spanish top-flight games have been played on Mondays since 2010 and while the league's organising body says the matches have large television audiences, they have led to a fall in attendances.
